SMART USES OF AI IN HEALTHCARE

The transformative power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a  cornerstone in reshaping healthcare experiences, revolutionizing the industry’s landscape.

AI’s integration has unlocked possibilities, offering unparalleled potential to enhance patient care, optimize diagnostics, streamline administrative tasks, and personalize treatment plans. By assimilating vast volumes of data, AI algorithms enable healthcare professionals to glean crucial insights, predict outcomes, and tailor interventions, fostering precision medicine and improving patient outcomes.

AI is also used to craft narratives that evoke deep connections,  transforming healthcare marketing into compelling, emotionally resonant storytelling. Some groundbreaking examples illuminate the transformative power of AI in reshaping healthcare experiences with an innovative fusion of AI technology and creativity.

Case 1
LIFESAVING RADIO (US)

NEXTMED: The first album and AI radio station to optimize surgical

Brief Description

Lifesaving Radio features over 30 hours of music clinically suited for peak surgical performance. Surgical teams can receive custom-curated playlists and personalized shout-outs and commentary from DJ AI Angus simply by entering their names, hospital/ facility, and procedure at LifesavingRadio.com and signing into their Spotify Premium account.

In March, the high-fidelity album and AI radio station were previewed to hundreds of clinicians, scientists, patients, and public health experts at NextMed Health. The annual in-person, full-sensory gathering explores pressing challenges and promising gains in health and medicine with innovators designing better, more equitable health experiences and outcomes.

Why is it significant?

This is significant due to its pioneering nature as the first album and AI radio station explicitly designed to enhance surgical performance. Recent clinical research has unveiled a surprising correlation: listening to music by the world-renowned rock band AC/ DC can remarkably boost the precision and effectiveness of surgical teams. This discovery showcases an innovative approach to optimizing medical procedures and highlights the potential impact of music on enhancing the skills and focus of healthcare professionals during surgeries.

Case 2
BAIGRAPHER (BRAZIL)

UFCSPA (Federal University of Health Sciences of Porto Alegre): 1st platform to use generative aI to make reminiscence therapy accessible and practical for Alzheimer's patients

Brief Description

Like a real-life biographer, ‘bAIgrapher’ starts by collecting stories from Alzheimer’s patients and their loved ones, interviewing them via a digital platform. Then, it creates personalized biographies that help patients reconnect with their past, a technique that can help strengthen memory and maintain cognitive functioning. The resulting biography is delivered as a printed book or audiobook, allowing patients to relive their memories in an attainable and engaging way.

One of those displays was at the entrance to the Spanish Parliament. At the same time, patients, lawyers, and activists pressed the government to shorten the up to 500-day wait for new drug approvals.

Why is it significant?

bAIgrapher’ can notably deliver interpersonal reminiscence therapy in a practical, scalable, and accessible way. Reminiscence therapy is a proven tool to improve the quality of life of patients with Alzheimer’s disease. It stimulates memories from the past to strengthen cognitive function, reduce depression and anxiety, and increase socialization.

UFCSPA is set to implement ‘bAIgrapher’ as part of the Alzheimer’s disease treatment protocol.

Case 3
PAINTINGS OF HOPE (SPAIN/EUROPE)

GILEAD SCIENCES: Artificial intelligence and art draw attention and hope to metastatic breast cancer (MBC)

Brief Description

Gilled Sciences, a research-based biopharmaceutical company focused on discovering, developing, and commercializing innovative medicines, used AI and sound analytics to turn the interviews of three women living with metastatic triple-negative breast cancer into works of art.

Using the sound waves, a robotic painting device translated their stories of struggle and hope into colors, contours, and brush strokes. This led to an art exhibition called “Paintings of Hope,” which was first displayed at ESMO in Paris and then traveled to hospitals and medical conferences in Europe and Spain.

One of those displays was at the entrance to the Spanish Parliament. At the same time, patients and advocates were pressing the government to shorten the up to 500-day wait for new drug approvals.

We saw

Technology can be creatively harnessed to address challenges, enhance productivity, and foster empathy, facilitating the exploration of intricate topics through a more straightforward, emotionally resonant, and exceptionally effective approach.

We learned that

It is possible to combine art, technology, and healthcare to transform intangible experiences into tangible expressions, highlighting patients’ emotional journeys and struggles, as seen in the Paintings of Hope project. By translating personal narratives into visual artworks, this initiative communicated complex healthcare challenges in a compelling and accessible manner, bridging the gap between scientific data and emotional storytelling, engaging diverse audiences, and promoting empathy and understanding about the realities of living with MBC and navigating healthcare systems.

Observing established habits can inspire creative and impactful innovations in healthcare. By recognizing the role of music in surgical settings, the Lifesaving  Radio initiative has built upon an existing practice—using music for focus and stress reduction during surgeries—and took it a step further by offering custom curated playlists and personalized shout-outs through AI technology.

Personalized storytelling in healthcare is a powerful tool.  The bAIgrapher’s personalized biographies serve as a means for patients to reconnect with their past, potentially aiding in memory retention and cognitive function. Delivering these biographies in printed or audiobook formats offers patients an accessible and engaging method to relive their memories, showcasing the therapeutic potential of storytelling in healthcare settings.
